WC 23rd February

Science - materials
Year 1 and Reception children enjoyed a hands-on learning experience by creating boats using a variety of materials such as paper, foil, plastic, and recycled items. Through this fun activity, the children explored their science learning about different materials and discussed which ones might be strong, light, or waterproof.

After building their boats, the children tested them in water to see whether they would float or sink, making predictions beforehand and observing the results carefully. This practical investigation helped develop their curiosity, problem-solving skills, and understanding of materials in an engaging and age-appropriate way.

Art exhibition
Harrowbarrow School proudly hosted a vibrant art exhibition celebrating the creativity and talent of pupils across the whole school. The exhibition showcased an impressive range of artwork from every year group, highlighting different techniques, styles, and inspirations developed throughout the year. From bold paintings and detailed drawings to imaginative sculptures and mixed-media pieces, each display reflected the children's enthusiasm and individuality. Families and visitors enjoyed walking through the exhibition, seeing how artistic skills progress across the school and appreciating the hard work and pride pupils take in their creations. The event was a wonderful celebration of creativity and a true reflection of the school's commitment to nurturing the arts.

Swimming
We had a fantastic first swimming session this week at Launceston pool. Please make sure children come with a pair of goggles as this really aids the swimming process!

We have another 4 weeks of swimming so please make sure children come with their swim kits every Friday morning.

First week of February!

Reception Maths Fun!
Our Reception children have been exploring greater than and fewer than using the hungry crocodile! They did a great job comparing numbers and showing which side the crocodile should chomp. Lots of smiles and super learning!

Early Morning Learning
Our Reception children have been busy making paper clip chains to strengthen their fine motor skills as part of their early morning work - great for little hands and growing confidence! Meanwhile, Year 1 have been working hard on number bonds to 20, then challenging themselves with One Minute Maths to sharpen their arithmetic skills. A fantastic start to the day for everyone!

Science Investigation Time!
The children have been busy taking part in a science experiment investigating which objects float or sink. We were set a challenge: the Tamar Bridge has collapsed and we need to build a boat for Mr O-T to get home! The children explored different materials, made predictions, and tested their ideas to see what would work best. Lots of excitement, brilliant thinking, and fantastic teamwork - what great scientists!

Writing in reception
We have been very busy writing our shopping lists. We carefully use our scissor skills to write cvc words to create a list! Some fantastic fine motor skills!

Number work
We have been looking at composition and ordering through a variety of activities. Charlotte very carefully organises the numbers in the correct order and matches with the unifix.

Button 2 (new tab)

Dragon facts
We have been collecting facts about dragons and Rosanna has compiled some fantastic sentences. What beautiful letter formation and presentation!

Responding to music
One of our art warm-up activities this week was in response to music. We chose Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons and used 2 contrasting coloured pencils tapes together to move our hands and bodies to the music. We thought the above piece of artwork, looking like the eye of a storm, captured the music and weather perfectly!

Exploring watercolour
We have been really enjoying this term's art unit, 'Exploring Watercolour'. We have been inspired by the work of Emma Burleigh and our own resident artist, Mrs Charlesworth. This week, we started with 3 colours and using various techniques such as washing, wet-on-dry and wet-on-wet to make marks on our paper. We then looked closely at our paintings to find hidden images and used more watercolours to add detail.

5 Little Speckled Frogs
This week, reception children have been focusing on the number rhyme, '5 Little Speckled Frogs' in their maths. We have had a lot of fun exploring various activities around this theme, including the above collage showing the blue pool, brown log and 5 speckled frogs.

Christmas week!

Christmas houses!
As a special end of term treat the children enjoyed making biscuit houses which they could decorate. We also had a wonderful Christmas dinner day and class party.

Party day!
We had various activities set up for our Christmas day. We made Christmas cards, decorations and wrote our letters to Father Christmas.

Happy new year!
We would like to take this time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy new year! Please feel free to share on showbie all of the lovely things you get up to!

A few reminders:

Tennis club - Thursday after school

'How to Catch a _____' Literacy and D&T

How to Catch a _____
Last week, children in Year 1 wrote up their neat copies of their brilliantly innovated instructions. Read above to find out how to catch a unicorn! In our literacy books, you will also find out how to catch spiders, cheetahs and rabbits!

Designing a moving picture
In D&T, Y1 designed moving pictures to illustrate our instruction writing. We experimented with different mechanisms and chose which one we thought would suit our design best.

The finished product
We used our designs to inform our finished products. We used a Brusho background, acrylic foreground and oil pastel characters to make vibrant illustrations. Our characters move using a side-to-side or up-and-down mechanism. These wonderful moving pictures are on display in the main school building just around the corner from the servery- please feel free to take a look! We will be using what we've learned throughout this project to help us make moving Christmas cards- which our Reception children are very excited about!

Remembrance day
Class 1 did some warm up sketches of poppies followed by some apple printed poppy fields. This was preceded by our minute of silence. Lest we forget.

School play!
We have had lots of fun learning our Christmas sketch. Scripts have gone home so please rehearse these and have fun learning the songs!

Instruction writing
We have began writing our innovated instructions! Look at this amazing introduction from one of our year one pupils. We can't wait to see the final piece.

How to catch a dragon!
We have started a very exciting unit on instructional writing and we will be writing our very own adaptations on how to catch a dragon!

Harvest assembly
Thank you to all the families who were able to come and watch our harvest assembly. Class 1 loved showcasing their amazing singing and dancing!

Class trip
Please make a note of the school trip to Sterts theatre on Friday 5th December. Children will need a packed lunch on this day!
